Ford called to investigate: Bronco fuel leak and escape

The solution to the recall, affecting around 43,000 Broncos and Escapes, does not entail exchanging the fractured fuel injector, as reported by NTHSB.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an inquiry into a recent recall concerning nearly 43,000 vehicles due to an issue with cracked fuel injectors that may lead to fuel leaks and potentially cause fires in the engine. The investigation into the recall, which affects certain Ford Bronco and Escape models, was detailed in a report issued on Thursday by the federal automotive regulators. The NHTSA, in a communication to the Dearborn, Michigan-based car manufacturer Ford, indicated that approximately 1% of the SUVs manufactured in 2022 and 2023, totaling around 42,652 vehicles, were affected by this defect.

Federal auto regulators have announced a probe into a recent recall of nearly 43,000 automobiles following an error with cracked fuel injectors they say can cause gas leaks and ignite engine fires.

The safety oversight authority released documents on their website initiating an investigation merely 48 hours following the disclosure of the recall. Up until Friday, the NHTSA had not documented any injuries associated with the recall.

Which Ford vehicles are currently subject to recall?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced a recall involving certain Ford models. This includes 22,270 units of the Bronco Sport from the 2022 and 2023 model years, as well as 20,382 units of the 2022 Escape. Each of the affected SUVs is equipped with a 1.5-liter engine.

If a recall is issued for my Ford Bronco or Escape, what steps should I take?

The announcement from the federal investigation indicates that vehicle owners can visit a Ford or Lincoln dealership to have a drain tube fitted into their vehicle free of charge. Additionally, the federal regulator has reported that there will be a complimentary update to the engine control software. This update is designed to identify any decrease in pressure within the fuel injection system. In the event of a pressure drop, the updated software will shut off the high-pressure fuel pump, decrease the engine's power, and lower the temperature within the engine compartment. Furthermore, owners will receive a notification advising them to seek service, as stated in the documents.

Safety officials have indicated that the solution provided by the car manufacturers allows fuel to leak from a hole in the cylinder head and fall to the ground beneath the vehicle. "The recall solution does not involve replacing the fuel injector that has developed a crack," stated NHTSA.

At what point in time were vehicle owners informed by Ford regarding the recall?

According to the NHTSA, dealers were informed about the recall on March 11. Ford announced that it started alerting vehicle owners about whether their car is included in the recall starting from April 1.
